5. 8 1/2(1963)
8½ is an Italian comedy-drama film which is directed by Federico Fellini. Co-scripted by Fellini, Tullio Pinelli, Ennio Flaiano, and Brunello Rondi, it stars Marcello Mastroianni as Guido Anselmi, a famous Italian film director.
The title of this movie refers to it being Fellini’s eighth and a half film as a director. His previous directorial work consisted of six features, two short segments, and a collaboration with another director, Alberto Lattuada, the latter three treated as “half” films. 8½ won two Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design.
4. 21 Grams(2003)
21 Grams is an American drama film which is directed by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu from a screenplay written by Guillermo Arriaga. It revolves around the consequences of a tragic automobile accident. Penn plays a critically ill mathematician, Watts plays a grief-stricken mother, and Del Toro plays a born-again Christian ex-convict whose faith is sorely tested in the aftermath of the accident.
The three main characters each have “the past,” “present,” and “future” story threads, which are shown as non-linear fragments that punctuate elements of the overall story, all imminently coming toward each other and coalescing as the story progresses.
3. The Tree Of Life(2011)
The Tree of Life is also an American drama film written and it is directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. It ranked no. 1 on review aggregator Metacritic’s “Top Ten List of 2011”,[4] and in January 2012 was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.
2. Clouds of Sils Maria(2014)
Clouds of Sils Maria is a drama film which is written and directed by Olivier Assayas and also starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz. The film follows an established middle-aged actress who is cast as the older lover in a romantic lesbian drama opposite an upstart young starlet. She is overcome with personal insecurities and professional jealousies—all while sexual tension simmers between her and her personal assistant.
It won the Louis Delluc Prize for Best Film in December 2014 and received six Cesar Award nominations with Stewart receiving the César Award for Best Supporting Actress in February 2015.
1. Solaris
Solaris is an American science fiction drama movie which is written and directed by Steven Soderbergh and also produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone.
The movie is a meditative psychodrama set almost entirely on a space station orbiting the planet Solaris and also adding the flashbacks to the previous experiences of its main characters on Earth. Clooney’s character struggles with the questions of Solaris’ motivation, his beliefs and memories, and reconciling what was lost with an opportunity for a second chance.
